Alberta has recently undergone a change in the mathematics curriculum. Students should be aware of the following as they enter one of the math programs at Spruce Grove Composite High School:

  • All math courses are 5 credits.

  • Students need a Grade 11 level math course to graduate.

  • A T1-84 graphing calculator will be used by teachers in classes where graphing calculators are required.  A list of other allowable calculators are posted on the Alberta Education website.

  • Math 20-2 and 30-2 courses are more algebraically rigorous than the prior Applied Math courses, this allows for more transferability between streams.

  • Math 30-1 and Math 30-2 students write diploma exams.

  • Math 30-3 and 30-4 students write school generated final exams.

  • Math 30-2 is accepted as a prerequisite for a variety of programs offered at universities, colleges and technical institutions.

  • Math 30-3 is accepted as a prerequisite for many of the trade programs offered by technical institutions.

  • Math requirements for post-secondary school admission are posted on the Alberta Learning Information Service (ALIS) website.

  • U of A, NAIT, and Grant McEwan have math prereqs for post-secondary.

  • Math 31 includes pre-calculus, limits, differential and integral calculus including trigonometric functions. It is a pre-requisite course for students entering physics, engineering, and honours mathematics, and is highly recommended for students entering Science and Commerce at the university level. It is strongly recommended that Math 30-1 be taken prior to Math 31.

  • Detailed information about the changes to the math curriculum are outlined on the Government of Alberta Education website.
