Regular Board Meeting Highlights - January 8, 2019
January 8, 2019 - The Board of Trustees is pleased to share with all education stakeholders the highlights of our recent Board meeting held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019. The adopted minutes will be available on our website following the next Regular Board meeting.
- The Board approved the Monthly Financial Report for the period ending November 30, 2019. At the end of that report period, revenues year-to-date were $34.9 million and expenditures year-to-date were $33.8 million resulting in a surplus of $1.1 million.
- The Board approved the 2019-2020 School Calendar and further directed Administration to circulate a 2020-2021 Draft Calendar to stakeholders for feedback. The Board has historically approved the calendar in March with a two-year future outlook (draft calendars). The intention is to adjust the timeline to approve the calendar for the subsequent year at an earlier point. Some calendars are more challenging than others, given the days on which certain dates fall. The 2019-2020 calendar created a challenge with respect to Fall Break planning. Families have expressed a preference to avoid two-day school weeks where possible. The original two non-instructional days for teachers in the Fall Break have now been moved prior to the first day of school for professional development purposes creating a full-week Fall Break for both students and staff. The Spring Break also changes to the fourth week in March to accommodate the province's Diploma Exam schedule.
- The Board established a submission deadline of February 15, 2019 for schools who wish to nominate a first-year teacher for the Alberta School Boards' Association's Edwin Parr Award. A committee consisting of Trustees Lorraine Stewart, Sally Kucher-Johnson and Paul McCann will determine Parkland School Division's submission for the prestigious award.
- The Board received as information the Occupational Health and Safety Report as presented by Deputy Superintendent Mark Francis.
Next Regular Board Meeting will be held on February 5, 2019 at the Centre for Education at 9:30am.
