Spruce Grove Composite
High School (10–12)

RCMP Update

May 11, 2017

Parents/Guardians of Spruce Grove Composite High School,

We just wanted to keep you informed about a series of social media activity involving threats directed towards Spruce Grove Composite High School.

One investigation led to some police activity on our school grounds on Wednesday, May 10th. Police took a suspect into custody without incident and charges are pending.

At Parkland School Division, the safety and well-being of all our students is of the utmost priority.  We'd like to extend a thank you to the local RCMP detachment for their assistance on this matter. From the moment the social media activity was discovered to the prompt follow-up that led to Wednesday’s arrest, no student or staff member was in any danger.

Additional threats were directed towards the school and an RCMP investigation continues.

On Friday, May 12th, when students arrive at the school, there will be further RCMP presence in the building. We ask that all students use either the south doors by the Main Office or the north doors by the main parking lot for entering and exiting the building. Classes will progress as usual. Students are reminded to have their Comp Card with them at all times.

It is unfortunate that someone has chosen to communicate something that is threatening to the school. We encourage parents to have a conversation with their child, and if they have any further information that would help RCMP with their investigation, please encourage your child to come forward through a trusted adult. Counsellors are always approachable at the Student Services Office located in Room 154.

At Parkland School Division, we take any threats very seriously. There is zero tolerance for not responding. Prevention of youth violence is a community responsibility and it is everybody’s duty to report. Precautionary measures are always followed under the direction of the RCMP. The safety of our students and staff is our primary concern. For more on our Violent/Threat Risk Assessment processes, visit the PSD website.

We appreciate your support as we manage this difficult situation.
